From Exhibition Stands To Manchester’s Modest Fashion Destination

If you’ve visited our Manchester boutique recently, it might be difficult to imagine where the story of Abayas Boutique began. Today, customers travel from across the UK to visit us. Others discover us online from Europe, North America, the Gulf and beyond. New collections launch online, parcels leave our store every day and the boutique has become a familiar destination for many women searching for modest fashion. But the journey looked very different in the beginning.

Long before social media, before online shopping became second nature and before modest fashion became the global industry it is today, we spent weekends travelling the country with rails of abayas, attending exhibitions, Islamic events and conferences wherever we could. Many of our earliest customers first discovered us not through a website, but while walking through an exhibition hall. Most of which still shop with us today.

Before Manchester, Before The Boutique

The business was built one customer at a time. In the early years, many of our abayas were manufactured here in the UK. We wholesaled to Islamic bookshops, travelled extensively and spent countless hours introducing our collections to communities throughout the country. There was no overnight success and no shortcut to growth. Everything was built gradually through hard work, consistency and a genuine belief that Muslim women deserved beautifully made modest clothing. Looking back now, it is remarkable how much has changed.

A New Chapter On Wilmslow Road

This year marks more than a decade since we moved from Cheetham Hill to Wilmslow Road, Manchester. The boutique many customers know today did not appear overnight. The space underwent a complete transformation before opening its doors. Walls were removed, floors rebuilt and the entire layout reimagined to create the welcoming environment customers experience today. Our goal was simple: to create a space where women could shop comfortably, browse at their own pace and enjoy modest fashion in a setting that felt considered and beautiful. Over the years, that boutique has become the backdrop to countless memories. Eid shopping trips. Wedding preparations. Mothers bringing daughters. Sisters shopping together. Customers travelling hours just to visit. Those moments mean far more to us than any refurbishment ever could.

Growing Beyond The Boutique

While the physical store continued to grow, so did our online presence. What began as a small website in 2011 has developed into an international customer base spanning the UK, Europe, North America and the Gulf. Many of our customers have never visited Manchester in person, yet they have become part of the Abayas Boutique story all the same. Some have been shopping with us for over a decade. Others discovered us only recently. We never take that trust for granted.

Still A Family Business

One thing that has never changed is the fact that Abayas Boutique remains a family business. Behind every collection, every launch and every decision is the same family that started this journey many years ago. As the business has grown, so too has the involvement of the next generation, bringing new ideas, fresh creativity and a vision for where Abayas Boutique can go next. Perhaps that is why the business still feels so personal to us. It has never simply been about clothing. It has always been about people.

Looking Towards The Future

The launch of BY AB marked one of the most exciting chapters in our journey so far, introducing a more contemporary direction while remaining rooted in the values that built Abayas Boutique in the first place. Looking ahead, we are excited about what comes next. Plans for menswear are beginning to take shape, while wholesale – a part of our story from the very beginning – is once again becoming an important focus for the future. More than anything, we remain committed to the same principles that have guided us for decades: quality, craftsmanship and creating modest clothing designed to be worn and loved for years.
